Situated at nearly 3,500 m above sea level, the Jungfraujoch offers a unique natural laboratory with extremely clean air, minimal local pollution, and high levels of solar and atmospheric radiation — ideal for high-precision measurements that would be impossible elsewhere. The research station is host to around 50 projects at any given time, and is part of the global monitoring network Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW), which is under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Additionally, the Research Station Jungfraujoch acts as a key station in many more global, European or national networks such as Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC), Integrated Carbon Observation Systems (ICOS) etc.
